Seizures and Epilepsy Clinic

For dogs and cats, from a first suspected seizure to long-term care.

Whether seizures have only recently appeared or have been managed for years, LVN offers neurological consultations to review the diagnosis, investigation options, seizure control and medication tolerance. A consultation stands on its own, with no obligation to proceed further. If you choose to pursue investigations or treatment, LVN can coordinate the complete pathway and remain your point of contact for agreed long-term care.

Who the clinic is for

At any stage of seizures or epilepsy.

We welcome dogs and cats with new episodes, an uncertain or incomplete diagnosis, or established epilepsy that could be better controlled. The consultation is tailored to what has already happened and what you would like to review.

New or unexplained episodes

When seizures first appear

For dogs and cats with new suspected seizures or unexplained episodic events. We review the history, any available videos and the neurological findings to consider possible causes and whether investigation would help.

Reviewing the diagnosis

When a diagnosis needs another look

For pets previously diagnosed with epilepsy where the original investigation was incomplete, the clinical course has changed or the response to treatment has been unexpected. We revisit the findings and explain whether further tests may be worthwhile.

Established epilepsy

When seizure control or medication needs reviewing

For dogs and cats whose seizures remain too frequent, whose medication causes troublesome adverse effects or whose owners wish to explore other options, including where episodes are infrequent. We review the existing treatment and discuss further medical or non-drug approaches.

Start with a consultation. Further investigations and treatment are options, not obligations. You do not commit to MRI, CSF sampling or regular appointments when you book.

Start with a consultation

Understand the options before deciding what to do.

We review seizure descriptions and videos, medical history, existing results, current medication and the effect of episodes on your pet’s daily life. The aim is to understand what is known, what remains uncertain and which choices are clinically reasonable.

For established epilepsy, this may mean reviewing seizure frequency, drug combinations, adverse effects, blood concentrations when relevant, rescue medication and possible adjustments. Nutrition and other non-drug measures can also be discussed. MCT-enriched diets have evidence of benefit for some dogs with idiopathic epilepsy, while comparable evidence in cats is limited. Such measures do not replace antiseizure medication when it is needed.

01
Review what is already known

Previous veterinary records, test results, seizure patterns and treatment response.

02
Identify what still needs answering

Clinical examination and further testing when indicated, with the benefits and limitations explained.

03
Agree a practical plan

Monitoring, treatment, further investigation or follow-up according to your pet’s needs and your preferences.

Helpful information to bring

  • Videos of episodes, if available
  • A seizure diary or dates and descriptions of episodes
  • Current and previous medications, including doses
  • Previous blood tests, MRI reports and other investigation results

LVN can help obtain records from your usual veterinary practice before the consultation.

Options for further investigation

Brain MRI and further investigations, coordinated by LVN.

If you are seeking a brain MRI for seizures, or would first like to understand whether imaging is needed, LVN can support the full pathway. Following neurological assessment, we can arrange suitable investigations at partner facilities, review the results, provide a written imaging report and discuss the findings and next steps at follow-up.

MRI of the brain

Brain MRI

LVN can arrange brain MRI through its partner facilities, select the imaging protocol and review the study. MRI may be recommended where structural brain disease is a concern or greater diagnostic confidence is sought.

Blood and metabolic tests

Blood and metabolic assessment

Blood tests, urine tests and selected additional investigations can help identify reactive or systemic causes of seizures and assess treatment safety.

Cerebrospinal fluid

Cerebrospinal fluid assessment

CSF collection, including lumbar sampling, may help investigate inflammatory or infectious disease in selected patients. Where indicated and safe, it can sometimes follow MRI under the same anaesthetic.

MRI and CSF sampling are not needed for every patient. The diagnosis and level of confidence depend on the history, examination and investigations undertaken. We explain what each test may add before anything is agreed.

Continuity over time

Support throughout your pet’s life.

Epilepsy management often changes over months and years. You can return when seizure patterns, medication or circumstances change, whether for an occasional review or an ongoing management arrangement.

For pets receiving long-term epilepsy care through LVN, we remain your single point of contact for neurological care throughout their life. LVN retains the clinical history, records and agreed treatment plans, and coordinates further investigations, hospital care and communication with your usual veterinary practice when required.

Different clinicians may become involved as needs or availability change. You can request another opinion within LVN when available, without starting again or losing the history already assembled.

Fees and estimates

Consultation fees and investigation costs.

Consultations are charged independently of any investigations. If further tests are useful, we explain the options and obtain estimates before you decide whether to proceed.

What might a brain MRI and CSF investigation cost?

For illustration, this is one possible pathway involving an LVN consultation, brain MRI, CSF collection and follow-up. It is not a package and may not be needed for your pet.

LVN initial consultation£480
Brain MRI with anaesthesia and routine facilities (illustrative hospital charge)£2,000
LVN MRI review and written report£240
LVN CSF collection, if indicated and safe£540
CSF facility and laboratory charges (Advanced Vetcare London example)£600
LVN follow-up consultation£300
Illustrative combined amount£4,160

All figures in this illustration include VAT. At Advanced Vetcare London, the £600 CSF facility charge covers CSF-related anaesthesia, nursing, consumables and laboratory fees, whether sampling is performed alone or alongside MRI. It is additional to MRI facility and anaesthesia charges; LVN's £540 professional CSF collection fee is listed separately. Charges at other facilities may differ. Additional blood tests, a dedicated clinician journey or other patient-specific hospital charges may change the total. A combined estimate is provided before proceeding.

Common questions

Things worth knowing

What if I am not sure the episodes are seizures?

You can still book a consultation. Not all intermittent neurological episodes are epileptic seizures. In dogs, movement disorders such as paroxysmal dyskinesia may look similar. The history, videos and neurological assessment can help distinguish different possibilities and determine whether further tests are useful. An in-person consultation is generally preferred when the nature of the episodes is uncertain.

Does my pet need an MRI before attending?

No. Start with an LVN consultation. We review the history, examination and existing information, then explain whether MRI or further testing would improve diagnostic confidence or influence treatment.

Can LVN help if seizures are poorly controlled or medication causes side effects?

Yes. A consultation can focus on seizure frequency, the effects of treatment on daily life, medication doses and combinations, relevant blood monitoring and whether other approaches may be useful. We can discuss medication adjustments, rescue plans, nutrition and other adjunctive options according to the individual circumstances.
